Embedded indexing service for Word
Your customers need easy access to the information that you supply. A good index can help them.
The creation of an index is a skilled task. If you need a high-quality index for a software reference manual, use our indexing service. This page explains the options available for an index (technically called an embedded index) in a Microsoft Word document.
You can have these types of index:
- A single index for a single Microsoft Word document. This is a popular option. Most back-of-the-book indexes are like this.
- Multiple indexes for a single Microsoft Word document. For example, in a reference manual for computer software, sometimes both a general index and an index of screen names is suitable.
- A single index for a set of Microsoft Word documents. One index can cover the content of many documents.
- Multiple indexes that cover more than one Microsoft Word document.
The screen shot above shows part of a small index that we produced for a medical software reference manual. For samples of embedded indexes in Microsoft Word documents, see the Samples page. It is not possible to see an embedded index separately from a document, because Microsoft Word gives an error message. For samples of indexes in PDF format, contact TechScribe.
Our area of expertise is computer software documentation. To find indexing experts in other fields, contact the Society of Indexers (www.indexers.org.uk).
